The scholar’s rock known as gongshi (供石) are naturally occurring rocks that Chinese scholars have long appreciated. Both Korean and Japanese cultures also have their own varieties called suseok (수석) and suiseki (水石). Rocks with strong resemblance to mountainous landscapes, particularly those believed to be inhabited by immortal beings were prized for its rarity. Drawing on this tradition, contemporary jewelry designer Elsa Jin has created a jeweled brooch of a gongshi. During the Tang dynasty, a set of four important qualities for gongshi were recorded: thinness (瘦 shòu), openness (透 tòu), perforations (漏 lòu), and wrinkling (皺 zhòu).
